About
Wild Life is a career retrospective of Brett Murray, one of South Africa's most recognisable artists, bringing together more than eighty sculptures spanning four decades. Born in Pretoria in 1961, Murray studied at the Michaelis School of Fine Art and won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2002.
Often called the dark prince of South African pop art, he works mainly in steel and mixed media, taking familiar images and giving them a subversive, bitterly funny twist that skewers power, identity and the clash between old and new South Africas. His 2012 exhibition Hail to the Thief II, which included the painting The Spear, became a national controversy. This survey at the Norval Foundation is the fullest look yet at his sculptural practice.
