About
Tears Now But Heaven Tomorrow honours Githan Coopoo, a much-loved Cape Town artist and self-taught jewellery designer who worked exclusively in clay. Coopoo studied English and Art History at UCT and drew on his Desi heritage, exploring the South African Indian community through a queer lens and describing his work as a love letter to it.
He began with clay earrings shown at fashion weeks around the world before moving to larger sculptural pieces he called false ceramics, hand-building vases, handbags and tiles from air-drying clay and acrylic paint. He was recognised by the British Fashion Council in its 2022 New Wave awards. This exhibition celebrates a distinctive and generous voice in the city's art and design scene.
