About
The Procession is a site-specific commission by Ghanaian-American artist Rita Mawuena Benissan. The cylindrical work combines sheer fabric and embroidered canvas with seagulls, palm fronds, colour and images of collective movement.
Benissan draws on Ghanaian royal processions, where umbrellas, dress and drumming honour traditional leaders. The permeable tapestry softens the museum's concrete Atrium and marks the first Atrium commission by a woman and by the youngest artist to take on the space.
