About
The AVA, or Association for Visual Arts, is the oldest non-profit gallery in Cape Town. It has occupied its space on Church Street since 1971 and traces its roots back through the South African Association of Arts to the South African Fine Arts Society, first organised in the 1850s. It took its current name and independent, membership-based form in 1995.
As a non-commercial, artist-focused organisation it mounts new exhibitions roughly every four weeks across every medium, from painting and ceramics to photography, installation and performance, giving space to both established and emerging South African artists.
Because it is not a selling gallery in the usual sense, its programme tends to be more experimental and less market-driven than its commercial neighbours.
