About

The Iziko South African National Gallery is the country's national art museum. It was founded in 1871 and has stood in its purpose-built home in the Company's Garden, the old Dutch East India Company vegetable garden at the top of the city, since the early twentieth century.

Its collection of more than eight thousand works began with nineteenth-century British and Dutch painting and has since broadened to centre South African and African art across painting, sculpture, photography, beadwork, textiles and works on paper. Since 2001 it has been run as part of Iziko Museums of South Africa, the state-funded group that also manages the South African Museum and other Cape Town institutions.

The programme mixes historical holdings with contemporary exhibitions and remains one of the few free-leaning public art spaces in the city.
