About
The Norval Foundation opened in April 2018 as a non-profit centre for the research and exhibition of twentieth- and twenty-first-century art from Africa and its diaspora. It was established by the Norval family and sits on the edge of a protected Cape lowland freshwater wetland in Tokai, with Table Mountain National Park as a backdrop.
Alongside its changing exhibitions the Foundation cares for permanent holdings and artist estates, and its galleries are known for serious survey shows of figures who were under-recognised in their lifetimes. A boardwalk leads through the wetland to a sculpture garden of large outdoor works, and the site includes a restaurant and sculpture terrace.
The setting, part museum and part nature reserve, makes it as much a half-day outing as a gallery visit.
