About
SMAC, short for Stellenbosch Modern and Contemporary, was founded in 2007 by Baylon Sandri in Stellenbosch. It established its Cape Town programme in 2011 and relocated the Cape Town gallery to 25 Church Street in the central city at the end of 2023.
The gallery represents established and emerging South African artists alongside figures from across the continent. Its programme includes museum-scale exhibitions, artist projects, publications and regular participation in international art fairs.
The Church Street location places SMAC inside the walkable city-centre gallery cluster, close to AVA and Aspire Art.
