About

Southern Guild was founded in 2008 by Trevyn and Julian McGowan and pioneered the collectible design category in Africa. It commissions, produces and exhibits limited-edition and one-off furniture, ceramics, lighting and sculpture by artists working across the continent.

It was the first African gallery to show at Design Miami, in 2011, and at Christie's design auction in London, in 2015. In Cape Town it occupies a large space in the Silo District next to Zeitz MOCAA, and it now also runs a New York gallery. Alongside exhibitions it supports makers through the GUILD Residency.

The work sits deliberately between art and design, and the shows are staged with the ambition of a contemporary art gallery.
