About

Stevenson opened in Cape Town in 2003 and is one of the most influential contemporary galleries on the continent. Its founders came back from Documenta 11 convinced that a new kind of ambitious, internationally minded space was needed in a country that then had few serious contemporary galleries.

Since 2008 the Cape Town gallery has occupied a converted factory, the Buchanan Building on Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock, with large rooms suited to demanding installations. Stevenson was among the first South African galleries to show artists from across the continent, and it now runs spaces in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Amsterdam.

Its programme of solo and group shows has helped build the international careers of many of the artists it represents.
