About
WHATIFTHEWORLD was founded in 2008 by Justin Rhodes and Ashleigh McLean and represents artists and designers from across Africa. It built its reputation in Woodstock before relocating to Buiten Street in the city centre, and its roster has included Athi-Patra Ruga, Mohau Modisakeng and other artists who have gone on to international careers.
The programme is ambitious and design-aware, and the gallery has collaborated widely, including on a shared Johannesburg space with Southern Guild. Shows tend towards the bold and theatrical.
It remains one of the key younger galleries to have shaped the current Cape Town scene.
