The Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, in a converted grain silo on the V&A Waterfront. It holds one of the largest collections of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora.

About

Zeitz MOCAA opened in September 2017 as the largest museum in the world devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. It is a public, not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects and researches the art of the continent, and its holdings grew out of the collection assembled by former Puma chief executive Jochen Zeitz, who partnered with the V&A Waterfront to create it.

The building is as much a draw as the art. It occupies a grain silo completed in 1924 that was once the tallest structure in sub-Saharan Africa and stood disused from 1990. Thomas Heatherwick's studio carved the galleries out of the silo's forty-two concrete tubes, cutting a soaring atrium in the shape of a single grain of maize through the middle of the complex. The result is roughly a hundred gallery spaces across nine floors, plus a rooftop sculpture garden.

The programme runs to large solo exhibitions, group shows drawn from the permanent collection and dedicated centres for photography, the moving image, performance and art education.
